Mother Jailed for Murder of Baby, Blamed Another Child

Nicole Blain, 30, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her 19-day-old daughter, Thea Jane Wilson, who died from catastrophic injuries including three skull fractures. The High Court in Glasgow heard that Blain attempted to blame another child for the infant's death.

The Tragic Incident

On July 14, 2023, at her flat in Greenock, Inverclyde, Blain violently shook and repeatedly slammed baby Thea against a hard surface, causing devastating injuries. These included three skull fractures, brain damage, and bleeding behind the eyes. The infant was rushed to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow but succumbed to her injuries.

Attempt to Shift Blame

In a desperate cover-up, Blain claimed she had woken from a nap to find her daughter on the floor and alleged that another child in the flat was responsible. Prosecutors dismissed this as "nonsense," and a pathologist confirmed that the injuries could not have been caused by a child dropping the baby.

Following a trial, a jury found Blain guilty of murder. Judge Lord Scott imposed a life sentence, with a minimum term of 19 years before she can be considered for parole. Blain, who had been on bail, was visibly distressed as she was led away in handcuffs.

Police and Community Response

Detective Chief Inspector Laura Young of Police Scotland stated: "This is a tragic case in which a baby has lost her life. Nicole Blain will now have to face the consequences of her actions. I thank all officers and partner agencies involved in the investigation."

Thea was described as a "perfect" baby when she was born on June 25, 2023. The court heard that her injuries were consistent with violent shaking and repeated impact, leaving no doubt as to the cause of death.
