A Wisconsin inmate has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide after allegedly murdering his cellmate using a sharpened toothbrush in a brutal prison attack.
The shocking incident occurred at the Waupun Correctional Institution, where 28-year-old Donald Maier is accused of stabbing 25-year-old Jovanni J. Flores-Figueroa multiple times in their shared cell on 19th June.
Gruesome Details Emerge
According to criminal complaints, Maier allegedly modified a toothbrush into a deadly weapon by sharpening one end to a point. Prison staff discovered Flores-Figueroa unconscious in their cell with multiple puncture wounds to his neck and chest.
Despite immediate medical attention, the victim was pronounced dead shortly after the attack. An autopsy later confirmed he died from sharp force injuries.
Violent History in Prison System
This tragic event highlights ongoing concerns about violence within the Wisconsin prison system. Maier was already serving a 12-year sentence for armed robbery and had previous disciplinary issues, including battery by prisoners.
The Waupun facility, one of Wisconsin's oldest prisons, has faced criticism in recent years for overcrowding and security lapses. This marks the second homicide at the institution in just over a year.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing. Maier now faces additional charges that could extend his prison sentence significantly.
Prison officials have declined to comment on specific security measures but stated they are reviewing all policies regarding inmate safety and contraband prevention.
