Five People Sentenced Over Roles in Joanne Penney Murder Case
Five Sentenced Over Joanne Penney Murder Roles

The sentencing hearing for five individuals involved in events surrounding the murder of Joanne Penney has begun at the Crown Court. The five defendants, who were not directly responsible for her death, face sentences for their roles in supporting the organised crime gang that carried out the killing.

Background to the Murder

Joanne Penney was shot at point blank range on March 9, 2025, at a property in Llys Illtyd, Talbot Green. The bullet penetrated her heart and left lung, lodging in her chest. She was pronounced dead at around 6.10pm. The murder was the result of a clash between rival organised crime groups, according to the court.

Prosecutor Jonathan Rees KC stated during the original trial that the expansion of Joshua Gordon's drug dealing activities into South Wales was not well received by a rival group led by Daniel Joseph, known as 'Jimmy'. In the lead-up to the murder, members of Gordon's 'Rico' group had been confronted and humiliated by Joseph's men.

Today's Sentencing Hearing

The court heard that Sai Manne, 26, of no fixed abode, has refused to attend the hearing. He is due to be sentenced for participating in the activities of an organised crime gang. Callum Kelleher, 37, from St Helens, Merseyside, is also being sentenced for participating in an organised crime gang. Molly Cooper, 34, from Leicester, faces charges of participating in an organised crime gang and acquiring ammunition for a firearm. Laura John, 23, from Cardiff, and Donna James, 51, also from Cardiff, are being sentenced for assisting an offender.

Opening the case, prosecutor Kathryn Lane said: 'Joshua Gordon sought to expand his drug dealing business into south Wales and started dealing in Cardiff and Talbot Green. Expansion into that area suffered a setback when Sai Manne was placed in Cardiff by Gordon to supply drugs on his behalf. Homes of others were used for supplying drugs, an activity known as cuckooing.'

Details of the Offences

The court was told that Manne was placed at the home of Callum Kelleher to supply drugs but was arrested, and his drugs and phone were seized. The sentencing hearing continues, with Mr Justice Fordham KC presiding. Four defendants are in the public gallery: Molly Cooper, Callum Kelleher, Donna James, and Laura John.
