In a tragic incident, the body of a young man was recovered from the River Lee in the centre of Cork city yesterday morning. The discovery was made at low tide, prompting a recovery operation involving Gardai and the Cork City Fire Brigade.

Details of the Discovery

The body, believed to be a male in his mid-20s, was found near the Mary Elmes Bridge on Merchant's Quay, opposite the main bus station. It is thought he entered the water in the early hours of Sunday. Gardai erected a small forensics tent at the scene as the body was lifted onto the quay for an initial examination.

Official Statement

A Garda spokesperson confirmed: "Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of an incident where a body was found in the river in Cork city on Sunday 24th May 2026 at approximately 8 am. A male in his 20s was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body has since been removed for a post-mortem examination."
