A 56-year-old woman from Westchester tragically lost her life after stepping out of her parked car and falling into an uncovered manhole in Manhattan. The incident occurred on Monday at approximately 11:19 PM, when the woman parked her Mercedes-Benz SUV near the Cartier Fifth Avenue Mansion on East 52nd Street.
Details of the Incident
According to officials speaking to the New York Post, the woman fell about 10 feet immediately after exiting her vehicle. The NYPD responded to the scene and found the woman unconscious and unresponsive at the bottom of the manhole. An EMS team extracted her and rushed her to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigation Underway
The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. No arrests have been made, but police have opened an investigation. Authorities are withholding the victim's name until her family can be notified.
Con Edison, which maintains tens of thousands of manholes in the city, stated: 'We are deeply saddened to confirm that a member of the public has died after falling into an open manhole. We are actively investigating how this occurred. Our thoughts are with the individual's family, and safety remains our top priority.'

City regulations mandate that any uncovered openings on the street must be barricaded and clearly marked with flags, lights, or signs. It remains unclear whether the open manhole was properly marked or if any work was ongoing at the time of the incident.
