Woman arrested after fireworks targeted at police in North Shields

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence following reports of disorder in North Tyneside that saw fireworks launched at police vehicles.

At 8pm on Thursday evening, police were made aware of anti-social behaviour in the Waterville Road area of North Shields, believed to be related to a vigil. The vigil is believed to have been in relation to the death of a teenager and was arranged and carried out without the involvement of his family.

Police response and investigation

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "It was reported that fireworks were being set off and targeted at police vehicles, with small fires also started. Thankfully, no-one was injured in the incident and the fires were extinguished a short time later."

"We are investigating the disorder and have arrested a woman in connection with the report on suspicion of a public order offence. She remains in police custody. Further arrest enquiries are ongoing."

Appeal for information

The spokesperson added: "We would ask that anyone looking to hold memorial events in any of our communities does so respectfully and with consideration for other members of the public at all times. They are not a means to commit crime or take part in disorder."
