Welsh rugby youths put out fire during training session

Junior players from a Welsh rugby club stopped their training session to put out a fire this week.

Players from the U15s and U16s teams at Whitchurch RFC in Cardiff spotted a fire had broken out near their training field at Hailey Park in the Welsh capital on Wednesday evening. They then raced across to make sure the fire was out before returning to playing.

"Unfortunately while training tonight our U15s and U16s noticed a fire had been started at Hailey park, they collected buckets of water from the changing rooms and put the fire out," said the post.

"Well done boys for looking after your local community."

Darren Donovan, the club's minis and youth chair, added: "The response has been phenomenal."

Dry conditions heightened fire risk

"It could have been a lot worse. If it hadn't been noticed, the whole woods could have gone up with it being so dry."

"We've seen the wildfires everywhere."

Wales has been affected by a number of fires in recent days, given the extreme heat and dry conditions.

It was a stroke of fortune that the club had a number of buckets to hand.

"One of the mum's noticed smoke coming out of the woods by Hailey Park," added Darren. "I shouted across to my brother-in-law that there was a fire.

"Luckily, we'd been raising money for the boys' tour on the weekend by having a car wash.

"So there were a pile of buckets."

Boys doused fire before fire brigade arrived

"In the middle of the session, the boys stopped training, went and filled the buckets up and went over to put it out.

"Thankfully, someone had already put it out, but the boys doused it to make sure."

"The fire brigade did come over to check, but the boys had doused it pretty well."

"You can imagine what a bunch of boys with a load of buckets would be like."
