A devastating fire in Walthamstow on Sunday evening destroyed one house and damaged up to 30 gardens, sheds, and studios, leaving residents grieving the loss of irreplaceable family heirlooms. The blaze, which broke out around 6:30pm between Vallentin Road and Shernhall Street, spread rapidly along the railway embankment, with witnesses reporting that all trees were alight within 17 minutes.
Family Loses Treasured Possessions
Ed and Mathilda Simmons lost all their family heirlooms in the fire. Their garden studio, where they had been storing possessions while renovating their loft, was gutted. Although their house was untouched, the outbuilding was destroyed. 'The building is replaceable, but it's the things from our family. We've lost it all. I had baby clothes that had been knitted by my grandma, we had photos, things that belonged to grandparents,' Mathilda told The Standard. The family had been saving these items to pass down to their children, aged two and five.
Residents Describe Horror
Another resident, who did not want to be named, described watching his garden studio and the bottom of his garden burn to the ground via CCTV while returning to Walthamstow. By the time they arrived home, their entire garden was on fire. 'We were screaming to anybody who could help because our house was going to be next,' he said. A fourth resident noted that the owners of the destroyed property had only moved into the top flat of the maisonette weeks ago. One resident said he was 'stressed, shocked and in disbelief.'
Community Rallies
The community has rallied in solidarity. Mr Simmons thanked the London Fire Brigade and locals who had been 'incredible,' donating food, coffees, pizzas, and air conditioning units. St. Mary's Church served as a support centre for affected residents. 'It's dawning on us that this is not going to be resolved overnight. It was exceptionally lucky that nobody died,' Mathilda added. 'There are a lot of innocent people here who have to deal with this.'
Wildfire Threat
The London Fire Brigade had warned of an 'extreme' threat of wildfires in the capital over the weekend amid the summer heatwave. While wildfires can be naturally occurring, the majority are caused by human behaviour, whether deliberate or accidental. Londoners are urged to create firebreaks around their gardens. Officials are working to determine the cause of the blaze, while urgent efforts are underway to restore the Weaver line.
