Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is exercising caution behind the scenes as a challenging transfer window unfolds. The Magpies are keen on signing a goalkeeper but are still smarting from Johan Manzambi's snub by Aston Villa.
Manzambi Deal Falls Through
Howe was aware of intensifying talks for Johan Manzambi last week but recognized the deal's potential complications, particularly competition for the SC Freiburg star. Those fears proved justified as Newcastle grapple with the absence of European football and a tight budget for wages and fees.
Despite these constraints, Newcastle made a competitive offer for Manzambi, which would have made him one of the highest-paid players at St James' Park despite his youth. The £49 million fee would have been a club record for SC Freiburg.
Other Transfer Targets
Tarik Muharemovic
The 23-year-old Bosnia centre-back has been offered to Newcastle, according to reports in Italy. He fits the club's age profile for younger stars. However, the same reports link Sunderland, Leeds United, and Bournemouth with the player, making Newcastle nervous. Centre-back is not a priority for the Magpies right now. US Sassuolo has set a €40 million price tag on Muharemovic, who also interests his former club Juventus. Juve could secure him at half-price due to a clause granting them 50% of any transfer fee.
Nick Pope
Pope is back training on Tyneside and has been pictured with teammates after a summer of speculation. Linked with Hull City and Ipswich Town, newly-promoted Coventry City is the latest club reportedly keen on the 34-year-old after struggling to secure Carl Rushworth. However, sources indicate no move has been made for Pope yet, and he remains a Newcastle player.
James Trafford
Trafford's decision is nearing as England's World Cup campaign concludes. He could feature if England plays in the third-place match in Miami on Saturday. Trafford instructed his camp to wait until after the World Cup to decide his future, with a holiday expected in August. He may want a deal finalized before the season starts.
Trafford is also admired by Aston Villa, who could haunt Newcastle again after pipping them to Manzambi. Villa's No. 1 Emi Martinez, who will face Trafford in Atlanta on Wednesday, is expected to leave this summer.
Newcastle's Transfer Window Challenges
Newcastle's transfer activity is constrained by a lack of European football and a limited budget. The club remains active in the market but faces stiff competition from rivals like Aston Villa.
