Two men have been charged with grievous bodily harm following a violent attack at a London Underground station that left a man with life-threatening head injuries. The victim, in his 20s, remains in hospital in a critical condition after the assault at Charing Cross station's ticket hall in the early hours of Sunday.
Charges and Arrests
Davion Defoe, 22, and Cavalli Russell, 18, both from Croydon, were charged with grievous bodily harm and appeared at Highbury Magistrates' Court on Tuesday. A third man, aged 24, who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, has been released on bail. Additionally, a fourth man has been arrested and remains in police custody.
Details of the Incident
Police were called to the scene at around 5:40 am on Sunday after reports of an assault. The victim had encountered a group of men earlier that morning—first outside a nightclub on Villiers Street at approximately 4:55 am, then again near McDonald's on Charing Cross Road at around 5:20 am. The final encounter occurred at the station at about 5:34 am, shortly before the attack.
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Stanley of the British Transport Police described the incident as a "shocking act of violence" that has left the victim in intensive care. He urged anyone with information or mobile phone footage to come forward, emphasizing the need to establish the events leading up to the assault.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have stated that there is no indication the attack was hate-related, despite the location near Heaven nightclub, an LGBT venue.
