Joe Rogan has shared his thoughts on the upcoming welterweight clash between Conor McGregor and Max Holloway at UFC 329, suggesting that Holloway's recent activity in the octagon will be a decisive factor. The fight, scheduled for July 11 in Las Vegas, marks McGregor's return after a five-year absence from the sport.
McGregor's Lengthy Hiatus
The Irish former two-division champion, who turns 38 just three days after the bout, has not competed since breaking his leg in a first-round defeat to Dustin Poirier in 2021. His last victory came six years ago when he knocked out Donald Cerrone in under a minute. A planned return against Michael Chandler two years ago fell through due to an injury sustained in training.
Holloway's Recent Activity
In stark contrast, Holloway has fought eight times since McGregor's last outing, securing wins over top contenders such as Yair Rodriguez, Arnold Allen, Justin Gaethje, and Poirier. This constant high-level competition, according to Rogan, will leave Holloway in peak condition for the rematch, which McGregor won in 2013.
Speaking on his podcast, Rogan described the fight as "bananas" and predicted that fans would be captivated by McGregor's return. "How could we expect the same McGregor? He hasn't fought in five years," Rogan said. "The thing about Max Holloway is that he isn't that much younger than Conor, but Max has been in constant high-level competition the entire time. He won the BMF title, beat Dustin, constant high-level competition. It's a different thing. This is 170lbs, which is even better, no weight cutting at all. And also, knowing this is such a high-profile fight, he's going to be in insane shape."
McGregor's Confidence
Despite concerns from fans who noted that McGregor appeared "slow" in recent training clips, the Irishman remains confident. In a social media post, he wrote: "Thank you for all the love, support, and encouragement over the last few days, people! I am feeling very energised entering intense training camp because of it! I am very grateful for the team I have around me. My coaches and training partners, we are all fully tuned in for the challenge at hand and it is a glorious time in our gym!"
He added: "I am better than ever, and I relish the opportunity to once again show my mastery in martial arts to the world. Lord Jesus in your name, please, to inspire the next generation to come! Amen."
The fight at UFC 329 promises to be a major event, with both fighters having much to prove. McGregor aims to end a five-year winless streak, while Holloway seeks to cement his legacy with a victory over one of the sport's biggest stars.
