Tributes to cyclist Steve Ames, 72, after Essex crash death

Steve Ames, 72, died in hospital on Thursday, October 22, two weeks after a collision with a pedestrian on West Road, Essex, at 4pm on October 8. His family has remembered him as a “devoted family man” who “left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate to know him”.

Family tribute and warning to cyclists

In a tribute, his family urged cyclists to “please wear a cycle helmet” and spoke of his passion for his boat, cars and e-bike. They described him as “quite a character” who shared a particularly close bond with his brother, Shaun.

“Steve had a real soft spot for animals. He adored his cat and always made a huge fuss of our grumpy cockapoo, Cooper,” the family said. “His love of animals was evident throughout his life and is reflected in his final wishes, with the majority of his estate being left to animal charities.”

A life of interests and generosity

The tribute continued: “He was a man of many interests and took great pleasure in his boat, his cars and his e-bike. Despite living with COPD and asthma, Steve was never one to sit still. He was always out and about, making the most of every opportunity life presented to him.”

“Earlier this year, Steve retired and treated himself to a 60-year-old MG, something that brought him immense joy. He also loved spending time at his local pub, where he enjoyed socialising with friends and family. Above all, Steve had a passion for being on the water. Throughout many glorious summers, he took great pleasure in sharing his boat with others, creating happy memories for those lucky enough to join him.”

Police appeal for information

The family said anyone who knew Steve will “remember his kindness, generosity and big heart”. They added: “He touched many lives with his warmth, humour and friendship, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him. We are going to miss our Steve more than words can say, but we will always cherish the memories, laughter and love he gave us. Rest in peace, Steve. And finally, in Steve's memory, if you're a cyclist, please wear a cycle helmet.”

Essex Police are continuing to investigate the crash and have urged anyone with information, CCTV, dash cam or other footage to contact them, quoting incident 0854 of 8 October. Reports can be made via the force's website or online Live Chat service, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, or anonymously through independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
