Three Dead In A1 Crash In Northumberland

Three people have died in a serious collision on the A1 in Northumberland, police have confirmed. The crash, described as “incredibly tragic”, occurred between Denwick and South Charlton at around 2.30pm on Thursday.

Northumbria Police said a silver Volkswagen Polo travelling northbound collided with a red Hyundai i20 travelling in the opposite direction. The male driver of the Hyundai, aged in his 80s, and a female passenger, aged in her 70s, were pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger from the Polo, aged in her 60s, also died at the scene.

The male driver of the Volkswagen, also in his 60s, was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries. The next of kin of those in the Polo have been informed and are receiving specialist support. Efforts are ongoing to contact the relatives of the Hyundai occupants.

The road was closed for around seven hours for investigation and has since reopened. Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses and anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward.

Inspector Steven Clare said: “This is an incredibly tragic incident where three people have lost their lives – and one other person remains in a serious condition. Our thoughts remain firmly with all of their loved ones.” He urged anyone who stopped at the scene but left before police arrived to contact the force.
