Dramatic CCTV footage has been released by West Midlands Police showing the terrifying moment a thief stole a car with a four-year-old girl still strapped in the backseat from an Oldbury petrol station.
The incident occurred on Sunday, 21st April, when the child's mother briefly left her black Mitsubishi ASX running while she paid for fuel at the BP garage on Birmingham Road. In a matter of seconds, an opportunistic thief jumped into the driver's seat and sped away with the terrified child still inside.
Mother's Quick Thinking Prevents Tragedy
The quick-thinking mother immediately alerted staff and police were called to the scene at approximately 7:40 PM. Meanwhile, the stolen vehicle was tracked to Walsall where it was abandoned just 20 minutes later.
Thankfully, the young girl was found unharmed and was safely reunited with her relieved family. West Midlands Police have confirmed the child wasn't physically injured but is receiving support following the traumatic ordeal.
Police Hunt for Suspect
Detectives have released the compelling CCTV footage showing the suspect, described as a white male of slim build, wearing a grey hooded top with the hood up, grey tracksuit bottoms, and dark trainers.
Police Constable Matt Cooke from West Midlands Police emphasised the seriousness of the incident: "We're determined to track down the man responsible for this frightening theft. Stealing any vehicle is unacceptable, but to take one with a child inside is particularly reprehensible."
Public Urged to Remain Vigilant
The shocking case has prompted police to remind motorists never to leave vehicles unattended with the engine running, even for brief moments. "This incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly thieves can strike," added PC Cooke.
