Texas Mother Survives Internal Decapitation in Hit-and-Run

A 39-year-old mother of two in Texas has survived a rare and catastrophic injury known as internal decapitation after being struck by a hit-and-run driver. Lolita Moore was rushed to hospital following the incident on March 12 at the intersection of FM 1960 and Cypress Station Road in northern Harris County.

Doctors explained to her family that the force of the impact separated her skull from her spinal column, although her head remained attached to her body. In most cases, such an injury is instantly fatal, but Moore miraculously survived. She also suffered multiple broken bones and bleeding on the brain.

According to her sisters, Moore had just left a grocery store when she slipped and fell onto the road while wearing Crocs. She fractured her ankle in the fall and was unable to get up quickly enough to avoid the oncoming vehicle. The driver did not stop and fled the scene.

Moore's sister, Sermon Swafford, appealed for help identifying the vehicle, believed to be a black Honda CR-V. 'For someone to hit a full human being and drive off… that person has a family too,' she said. Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Harris County Sheriff's Office or Crime Stoppers.

Moore's daughters, aged 19 and 12, are awaiting her recovery. A GoFundMe page set up by the family states she is now breathing but remains very weak. She will require a feeding tube, blood thinners, a halo device for stabilization, and a tracheostomy. The fundraiser had raised nearly $2,700 as of Friday evening.
