A 13-year-old boy has tragically died after getting into difficulty in a West Yorkshire reservoir on Bank Holiday Monday, police have confirmed.
West Yorkshire Police were called to Leadbeater Dam on Lumb Lane, Halifax, just before 3.20pm following reports of a child in distress in the water. Emergency services attended the scene and the teenage boy was pulled from the reservoir. He was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Calderdale CID has launched an investigation into the incident. However, authorities have stated that there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. The boy’s family has been informed and is being supported by specially trained officers.
This tragic event has cast a shadow over the Bank Holiday weekend for the local community. Leadbeater Dam, a popular spot for walkers and anglers, is located in a rural area near Halifax. Police have urged the public to avoid speculation while inquiries continue.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of open water, especially during warmer weather when more people are drawn to reservoirs and lakes. West Yorkshire Police and local safety groups have previously warned about the risks of swimming in reservoirs, which often have hidden currents, cold water shock, and underwater hazards.
