A 17-year-old Michigan teenager is recovering from severe injuries after she was struck by a vehicle while fleeing a shooting at an after-prom party on Saturday night.
The Incident
Jordyn Williams, a high school student, was attending an after-prom party at the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall in Fruitport, a small town near Lake Michigan, when gunfire erupted around 11 p.m. According to her family, she ran from the scene and was hit by an oncoming car, leaving her unconscious with multiple broken bones.
The Fruitport Police Department reported that four people suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Another individual was also struck by a vehicle during the chaos. Police stated the shooting stemmed from a dispute and was not an active shooter situation. Authorities have not released the identities of the other victims or announced any arrests.
Family's Ordeal
Jordyn's father, Andre Williams, expressed his anguish on Facebook, saying, 'My baby girl started her night with such good vibes. Excited about the prom... looking absolutely gorgeous. But now I'm staring at you with tubes down your throat... unconscious with multiple wounds and broken bones.' He shared that his 45th birthday wish is for his daughter to recover.
Jordyn's mother, Tamara, said her daughter has sickle cell anemia and described her as 'shy and soft-spoken.' Tamara revealed that Jordyn designed her own prom dress and sewed the bodice by hand.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to cover medical bills, home modifications for wheelchair accessibility, and other expenses. The fundraiser states, 'No parent should ever have to worry if their child will come home after what was supposed to be a joyful occasion.'
Medical Condition
Jordyn is being treated at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. She underwent surgery to repair a fractured left femur and requires another surgery on her knee. Her pelvis was broken in three places. She has been on a ventilator but is now breathing on her own.
Community Reaction
A neighbor, Lisa Bosworth, told local media she heard over 30 gunshots and saw teens fleeing through her yard. 'There were cars parked all the way down to the dead end sign, and they were scrambling and screaming for their lives,' she said.
Police continue to investigate the shooting and urge anyone with information to contact the Fruitport Township Police Department.
