A Scottish man who worked as a military instructor in Ukraine has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison for espionage on behalf of Russia. Ross David Cutmore was recruited by a member of the Russian special services and transmitted sensitive information about the Ukrainian military in exchange for payment.
Details of the Case
Cutmore pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal at the Kyiv district court of Odesa on 30 April. His activities included providing coordinates of Ukrainian military units, photographs of a training area, and data that could identify service personnel and facilities in Odesa. Additionally, he was found to have illegally possessed a Makarov pistol and combat cartridges, and had discussed the potential use of explosive devices.
Implications
The case highlights ongoing security concerns in Ukraine amid the conflict with Russia. At least 27 people were killed in Russian strikes across eastern Ukraine, underscoring the volatile situation. Cutmore's sentence serves as a warning against espionage activities that threaten national security.
