Teenager Dies in Derbyshire River Swimming Tragedy Amid Heatwave
Teen Dies in Derbyshire River Tragedy Amid Heatwave

An 18-year-old has died after getting into difficulty while swimming in the River Derwent at Darley Abbey, Derbyshire, on Friday afternoon. The tragedy is the latest in a series of open-water deaths during the current heatwave, following fatalities in Oldham and Stockport within the previous 24 hours.

Emergency Response and Rescue

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) deployed five fire engines and three water rescue units to the scene shortly after 12:46pm. A younger teenager was rescued from the water around 4:30pm, but police later confirmed the 18-year-old's body had been recovered. Officers are supporting the victim's family.

Warning from Fire Service

Louise Dempsey, group manager at DFRS, issued a stark warning, stating that Derbyshire's open water sites—including quarries, reservoirs, lakes, and rivers—"all have hidden dangers" such as strong currents and hidden debris. "The water remains cold even in hot temperatures, meaning cold water shock can occur within seconds. This can cause you to gasp for breath, lose control of your breathing and become disorientated very quickly," she said. She advised using the 'Float to Live' technique: lay on your back, extend arms and legs, and float to calm breathing before calling for help or swimming to safety.

A DFRS spokesperson extended condolences to the family and friends at this "sad and distressing time."

Council and Community Response

Cllr Sarah Chambers, cabinet member for public safety at Derby City Council, said: "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with all those affected by the incident at Darley Abbey on Friday afternoon. We are saddened to hear of this tragic loss of life, and our hearts go out to the family, friends, and the whole community during this incredibly difficult time." She added that the incident "serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers of our inland waterways. Even during warm weather, rivers present unique hazards that are not always visible from the riverbank."

Recent Water Deaths in the Region

This death follows two others in Greater Manchester: an 18-year-old at Dovestones Reservoir in Oldham and a 49-year-old man at Sykes Reservoir in Stockport. Both occurred within 24 hours, prompting emergency services to warn about the risks of open-water swimming.
