A quiet suburban street in Sydney's northwest has become the centre of a major police investigation after a local businessman was brutally gunned down in his own driveway.
Suman Mokhtarian, 39, is fighting for his life in hospital after being shot multiple times outside his Riverstone home on Tuesday evening. The violent attack has sent shockwaves through the typically peaceful community.
A Community in Shock
Neighbours described hearing multiple loud bangs around 7:30 PM, initially mistaking them for fireworks before the horrifying reality became clear. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said they saw a dark-coloured SUV speeding away from the scene moments after the shooting.
"It's absolutely terrifying," another local told reporters. "This is normally such a quiet area where everyone knows each other. To have something like this happen right on our doorstep is unbelievable."
Police Launch Major Investigation
Detectives from the State Crime Command's Criminal Groups Squad have taken charge of the investigation, treating the incident as a targeted attack. Forensic officers spent hours combing the property for evidence, while police established a crime scene that stretched across multiple properties.
Police have confirmed they are exploring several lines of inquiry, including Mr Mokhtarian's business connections. The 39-year-old is known to operate several local businesses, including a car dealership and a café.
Appeal for Information
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward, particularly those who may have witnessed the dark-coloured SUV fleeing the area. They're also seeking dashcam footage from vehicles in the Riverstone area between 7 PM and 8 PM on Tuesday evening.
Detective Chief Inspector David Caldwell emphasised that "this appears to be a targeted incident rather than a random attack," seeking to reassure concerned residents while appealing for public assistance.
The investigation continues as Mr Mokhtarian remains in a critical but stable condition at Westmead Hospital, surrounded by family members.
