A Skelmersdale man has been handed a significant prison sentence for a horrifying and premeditated hammer attack on his ex-partner's new boyfriend, leaving the victim with life-altering injuries.
Lewis Boardman, 27, was sentenced to 12 years in prison at Preston Crown Court after being found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. The court heard how the violent assault was a calculated act of revenge.
A Vicious and Premeditated Assault
The horrifying incident unfolded on the evening of November 12th, 2023. Boardman, consumed by jealousy, lay in wait for the 26-year-old victim outside a property on Birch Green. As the unsuspecting man returned home, Boardman launched a savage and unprovoked attack.
Armed with a hammer, he struck the victim multiple times to the head and body. The brutal assault only ceased when the victim's screams alerted neighbours, who bravely intervened, causing Boardman to flee the scene.
Life-Changing Injuries and Impact
The victim was rushed to hospital with severe injuries, including a fractured eye socket and deep lacerations to his head. In a powerful victim personal statement read aloud in court, he described the profound physical and psychological impact of the attack.
He revealed he now suffers from constant headaches, dizziness, and crippling anxiety, stating the incident has "changed my life completely" and shattered his sense of safety.
Justice Served at Preston Crown Court
During the sentencing, Judge Richard Gioserano condemned Boardman's actions, highlighting the extreme violence and clear premeditation involved. The judge noted that Boardman had specifically armed himself with the weapon and lay in wait, indicating a clear intent to cause serious harm.
Detectives from Lancashire Police welcomed the sentence. A spokesperson stated, "This was a horrific attack which left the victim with significant injuries. Boardman is a dangerous individual, and the streets of Lancashire are safer with him behind bars. We hope this sentence allows the victim to move forward with his life."
