A dramatic shootout erupted outside the California State Capitol building in Sacramento on Thursday, leaving a male suspect dead after exchanging gunfire with law enforcement officers.
The incident began shortly before 9:30 AM local time when Capitol Police officers confronted an armed individual near the iconic Capitol building. According to official reports, the suspect immediately opened fire upon being approached by officers.
California Highway Patrol spokesperson confirmed: "The suspect produced a firearm and discharged it toward the officers. The officers returned fire, striking the suspect."
The area was immediately placed on lockdown as multiple law enforcement agencies, including Sacramento Police and California Highway Patrol, swarmed the scene. Employees and visitors inside the Capitol building were instructed to shelter in place while the situation unfolded.
