Shark Attack at Rottnest Island Leaves Man Critical

A man has been critically injured in a shark attack at a popular holiday island off the coast of Western Australia.

Incident Details

The attack occurred at Rottnest Island, approximately 19 kilometres from Fremantle, around 10am on Saturday, according to a St John WA ambulance service spokesperson.

The victim, a man in his 30s, is in a critical condition. A rescue helicopter was dispatched to the island to evacuate him to a mainland hospital. He was initially transported by boat to shore at Geordie Bay on the northern side of the island.

Shark Sighting

Surf Life Saving WA reported that a five-metre great white shark was spotted 80 metres offshore around the time of the attack. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has urged people to exercise extra caution in the Geordie Bay area.

Rottnest Island, measuring 11 kilometres long and 4.5 kilometres wide, is a highly popular tourist destination. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the man receives medical treatment.
