A 15-year-old girl who died after getting into difficulties in the sea off Merseyside has been named as Chiedza Nyanjowa. The teenager, from Cheshire, was taken to Alder Hey children's hospital after swimming at Formby beach on bank holiday Monday.
Members of the public attempted to help Chiedza, but she died in hospital on Saturday, Merseyside Police said. Her family paid tribute, describing her as a bubbly person who loved Christ and going to church. They said she loved cooking, was a giver, and wanted to be a nurse when she grew up so she could give back.
In a statement, the force said: 'Her family would like to express their gratitude to everyone that helped Chiedza. Her family are glad that there were people around her to support her; their support shows that she was loved.' A report on her death has been passed to Sefton coroner's office.
Separately, a 19-year-old man died after entering Balderton Lake in Nottinghamshire on Thursday. Emergency services were called at 2.35pm, and the man was recovered from the water and taken to hospital, but did not survive. Police said there were no suspicious circumstances.
The deaths come during a heatwave that has seen temperatures soar to record highs for May in England and Wales. The Royal Life Saving Society has warned that water temperatures remain very cold despite the air temperature, posing a risk of cold water shock.
