A schoolboy is fighting for his life after a freak train incident in Melbourne, Australia, where his backpack became entangled between carriages, dragging him several metres and trapping him underneath.
Details of the Incident
The Year 7 student was standing on a platform at a railway station in North Melbourne on Monday, May 11, at around 4pm local time. According to Australian news broadcaster Seven News, the boy was attempting to retrieve his phone when his backpack got caught between the train carriages. He was struck by the train, dragged several metres, and then became trapped underneath, all in front of horrified commuters, including fellow students from his school.
Emergency Response
Fire and Rescue Victoria used a hydraulic jack to lift the train and free the trapped boy, who sustained serious injuries to his lower body. The extrication process took between 45 minutes and an hour. Eight paramedics treated the boy at the scene before rushing him to the Royal Children's Hospital in a critical condition under "lights and sirens," the highest level of emergency response.
Medical and Emotional Impact
Ambulance Victoria described the scene as "incredibly traumatic." Paramedic Alex Hemsley praised the response team, stating, "They did a fantastic job. They did everything as quickly as they could have done, provided the highest-level care to this young person in potentially one of the most traumatic days of their lives." First responders are receiving counselling support.
The principal of St Aloysius College, the boy's school, sent an email to students and parents offering support, acknowledging the incident's unsettling nature. Paramedics remain hopeful for a full recovery, according to Seven News.
