An explosion rocked the coastal town of Scarborough in the early hours of Friday morning, prompting the evacuation of dozens of homes and the closure of nearby roads. Emergency services rushed to the scene on Cambridge Street following reports of a blast shortly before 6am.
Residents Woken by Loud Boom
Local residents reported being jolted awake by a powerful 'loud boom' at approximately 5.45am. One eyewitness told This Is The Coast that the sound was startling and shook nearby properties. The explosion occurred at a residential property, leading to a swift multi-agency response.
Emergency Services Respond
Police, ambulance crews, and North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue are currently at the scene. Firefighters are working alongside the ambulance service, police, and the gas board to ensure the area is safe. A cordon has been established, and Cambridge Street along with Victoria Road has been sealed off. Access to the Aldi supermarket has also been restricted.
North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue issued a statement: "Fire crews are currently supporting a multi-agency response to reports of an explosion at a residential property on Cambridge Street in Scarborough. We were called to the incident at around 5.45am today (Friday 8 May). As a precaution, around 50 to 70 nearby homes and businesses have been evacuated and a cordon remains in place."
