South Carolina School Officer Under Investigation for Taser Incident
A high school resource officer in South Carolina is facing a formal state investigation after disturbing video footage surfaced, allegedly showing him striking a young baseball player on the head with his taser. The shocking incident is reported to have occurred earlier this week following a private school baseball game in Mullins, Marion County.
State Investigation Launched Following Viral Video
The Marion County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that the matter has been referred to the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) for a thorough independent investigation. "We've turned the matter over to the State Law Enforcement Division for investigation," stated Tammy Ervin, a representative for the sheriff's office. "The deputy in question has been reassigned pending SLED's investigation."
The video, which has rapidly spread across social media platforms, depicts the officer with his taser in his right hand while his left arm appears to be wrapped around the neck of the player in what resembles a chokehold. The officer is then seen angrily using the taser to strike the young athlete, identified in reports as Andrew, on the side of his head. The player is visibly shaken and wincing in pain following the blow.
Chaotic Scene with Angry Parents
The altercation unfolded amidst a group of furious parents who had gathered around the officer and the player. Their reactions to the violent strike were captured clearly in the footage. One parent can be heard shouting, "What the f***'s wrong with you?" while another yells, "You gonna lose your pension over that one, homie." The chaotic scene escalated as parents urged the terrified player to kneel down to prevent further violence.
According to the officer's account, he claims he only lashed out because the player was continuously standing on his foot with his cleats. However, the exact catalyst for the confrontation remains unclear. An adult off-camera suggests that a parent may have threatened the officer earlier, adding another layer of complexity to the incident.
Unanswered Questions and Ongoing Probe
Further confusion arises as the video shows the officer asking, "Where is the other fella at?" followed by a man in handcuffs walking in front of the camera. The reason for this individual's detention is not explained in the footage. The incident occurred after Pee Dee Academy's 7-0 victory over Lee Academy, but what specifically triggered the confrontation between the officer and the players or parents is still under investigation.
As SLED continues its probe, the officer remains reassigned, and the community awaits answers regarding this alarming use of force at a school sporting event. The case highlights ongoing concerns about the conduct of school resource officers and their interactions with students, especially in volatile situations.
