Gas Cylinder Blast Rocks Residential Rome Street, Causing Widespread Damage

Emergency services in Rome have responded to a major incident after a powerful explosion tore through three apartment buildings in the Piana del Sole district. The blast, which occurred at the intersection of Via Tavagnasco and Via Ciglie, has resulted in three people being rushed to hospital and the evacuation of dozens of residents from the area.

Cause and Immediate Aftermath

Local media reports, including coverage from Corriere Della Sera, indicate that the explosion was caused by the detonation of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders buried in the back garden of a residential property. The force of the blast was so immense that debris was found scattered up to 660 feet away from the origin point.

Rome's mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, commented on the incident, stating, 'Firefighters will determine the cause. It appears to be a Liquefied Petroleum Gas cylinder in one of the houses. The power of the explosion is quite impressive. The surrounding buildings are damaged, some will be uninhabitable.'

Casualties and Injuries

The elderly owners of the property where the gas canisters were buried, identified as Michele and Chiara De Bari, aged 84 and 86 respectively, were taken to Sant'Eugenio Hospital in critical condition. Both suffered burns to at least 20% of their bodies, but medical officials have indicated that their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Additionally, a 24-year-old man was rescued by firefighters from the rubble of the damaged buildings and transported to hospital for evaluation. In total, five buildings have been rendered uninhabitable, and 29 people have been forced to evacuate from the area due to safety concerns.

Resident Accounts and Property Damage

Local residents described the terrifying moments during and after the explosion. Cristian, a resident, told an Italian newspaper, 'We were at home, and at a certain point we heard thunder and a piece of wood flew into our kitchen. The blast also bent the windows in our house.'

Another resident, Giorgia, recounted, '[Firefighters] told me the windows and doors had exploded. As soon as I arrived, I smelled the strong smell of gas.' The explosion also caused significant damage to several cars parked nearby, adding to the widespread destruction in the residential street.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Multiple teams of firefighters and police were dispatched to the scene to manage the aftermath of the explosion. They are currently conducting a formal investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the detonation. Mayor Gualtieri expressed gratitude to the emergency services for their swift response and emphasized the need to assess how many residents will require relocation due to the uninhabitable conditions of the damaged buildings.

The incident has highlighted the potential dangers associated with gas storage in residential areas, with authorities working diligently to ensure the safety of all affected individuals while investigating the root cause of this devastating explosion.
