Following the violence on Saturday 20 December 2025, he disappeared, triggering an extensive search.
Initial investigations leaned heavily on AI-powered surveillance systems, which are now commonplace in doorbells, vehicles, and extensive networks of automatic number plate recognition cameras. However, Valente effectively neutralised this technological advantage. He wore a medical mask to avoid facial recognition, used a mobile phone that was difficult to trace, and repeatedly changed the licence plates on his rental car.

Armed with this new lead, police were able to effectively deploy AI-powered Flock Safety cameras, which specialise in tracking vehicles. The system revealed that Valente's car had been captured on camera multiple times in the period before the shootings, allowing officers to trace his movements and locate him.

This successful collaboration between online communities and law enforcement stood in stark contrast to a notorious previous incident. During the investigation into the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, Reddit users engaged in widespread and harmful speculation, falsely accusing several individuals.
This time, the moderators of the local Providence subreddit actively worked to prevent similar misinformation and reckless accusations from spreading on their forum. Their efforts helped ensure the platform served as a force for good, channelling useful information to the authorities rather than fostering a digital witch hunt.
