A Metropolitan Police officer has been sentenced to 14 months in prison after assaulting a vulnerable patient at the Royal London Hospital. The disturbing incident, captured on bodycam footage, showed PC Jonathan Marsh repeatedly punching and kneeing the victim in a shocking display of excessive force.
Violent Attack Caught on Camera
The assault occurred in May 2023 when officers were called to the hospital regarding a disruptive patient. Bodycam footage revealed Marsh punching the man seven times and kneeing him twice while the patient was being restrained by other officers. The victim, who had been sectioned under the Mental Health Act, was left with facial injuries.
Judge Condemns Officer's Actions
At the Old Bailey sentencing, Judge Nigel Peters KC described Marsh's actions as "completely unacceptable" and noted the officer had abused his position of power. "Police officers are there to protect the public, not assault them," the judge stated, highlighting the breach of trust in this case.
Police Response and Consequences
The Metropolitan Police confirmed Marsh has been suspended and faces misconduct proceedings. A spokesperson emphasized that such behavior "has no place in policing" and expressed regret over the incident. This case adds to growing concerns about police conduct in London, particularly when dealing with vulnerable individuals.
