Police Officer Stuart Hooper Cleared of Assault After Violent Clash in Epping Forest
Police officer cleared in Epping Forest assault case

An Essex Police officer has been found not guilty of assault after a violent altercation during an arrest in Epping Forest. PC Stuart Hooper was cleared of wrongdoing following a trial that scrutinised footage of the incident, which had gone viral on social media.

The confrontation occurred in March 2022 when officers responded to reports of a disturbance in the forest. Bodycam footage showed Hooper striking a suspect multiple times during the arrest, leading to an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Controversial Footage Sparks Debate

The video evidence showed the officer delivering several blows to the suspect while shouting commands. Defence lawyers argued Hooper's actions were justified given the suspect's resistance and aggressive behaviour.

"PC Hooper used necessary and proportionate force to control a volatile situation," stated his legal representative. "The jury recognised that police officers often face split-second decisions in dangerous circumstances."

Mixed Reactions to Verdict

The acquittal has drawn mixed reactions from campaigners and local residents. Police accountability groups have expressed disappointment, while the Police Federation welcomed the decision as supporting officers facing difficult situations.

An Essex Police spokesperson said: "We respect the court's decision and will now consider any learning from this case. Our officers face challenging situations daily and the vast majority act with professionalism."

The incident has reignited discussions about police use of force and the challenges of policing public order situations. The IOPC confirmed it continues to monitor complaints about police conduct in the region.
