More than 1,000 homes in Plymouth have been evacuated following the discovery of a suspected World War Two device at a building site in the Southway area. A 400-metre cordon has been established, leading to school closures and residents being advised to leave their properties.
Specialists Assess the Device
Royal Navy unexploded ordnance specialists have been working through the night to assess the device and plan its safe removal. An evacuation centre has been set up at Southway Youth and Community Centre for affected residents.
Council Urges Cooperation
Plymouth City Council has stressed that the device cannot be made safe until the evacuation is complete, urging residents to cooperate for their safety. The discovery was made on a building site, prompting immediate action from authorities.
Residents are being asked to remain away from the area until further notice, with emergency services coordinating the response. The council continues to provide updates as the situation develops.
