A quiet cul-de-sac in Redditch became the scene of a horrifying crime that has left a community in shock. David King, a 72-year-old pensioner, has been handed a life sentence for the brutal murder of his neighbour, Ian Kirwan, in a dispute that escalated into unimaginable violence.
The court at Worcester Crown Court heard how the fatal encounter on October 10, 2022, was captured in chilling detail by the victim's own doorbell camera. The footage showed King, armed with a hammer, confronting 58-year-old Mr Kirwan outside his home on Winyates Way.
A Vicious and Sustained Attack
What began as a confrontation quickly descended into a frenzied attack. Prosecutor Michelle Heeley KC detailed how King first struck Mr Kirwan on the head with the hammer before producing a knife and stabbing him multiple times in the chest.
Despite his terrible injuries, Mr Kirwan managed to stagger back into his own home. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after emergency services arrived. The attack was witnessed by other horrified residents, including a young girl who was playing nearby.
The Aftermath and Investigation
Following the attack, King returned to his own property and attempted to clean the blood from his weapons and clothing. However, the damning doorbell footage provided irrefutable evidence of his guilt.
During the trial, it emerged that King had a history of aggression and had previously been involved in altercations with other neighbours. The court heard he had become increasingly angry about people allegedly slamming car doors near his property.
