A nurse is expected to be removed from the professional register after a tribunal concluded she made a series of antisemitic remarks about Jewish patients. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) panel determined that Helen Oluyemisi Balogun displayed a consistent pattern of attempting to downplay her offensive comments.
Details of the Case
The tribunal heard that Ms Balogun referred to Jewish patients as being 'tight with money' and made remarks about Jewish people not believing in Jesus. These comments created an intimidating atmosphere for a colleague who was present. Additionally, she used the term 'half-caste' to describe a patient's partner, which the panel described as 'offensively discriminating'.
Panel's Findings
The panel concluded that Ms Balogun's conduct 'went far beyond what the public would expect from a registered nurse'. Despite her representative claiming she showed 'sincere remorse', the panel found that the seriousness of her actions warranted an interim suspension and eventual removal from the register.
This case highlights the importance of maintaining professional standards and ensuring that all patients are treated with respect and dignity, regardless of their background.
