Police Release Crucial Update in Case of Missing Brazilian Academic

Essex Police have issued a significant update in their ongoing investigation into the mysterious disappearance of Vitoria Figueiredo Barreto, a 30-year-old Brazilian academic who vanished two weeks ago. The force has now obtained new CCTV footage from the harbour area in Brightlingsea, a coastal town in Essex, as they intensify their search efforts.

Timeline of the Disappearance

Vitoria Figueiredo Barreto was reported missing on March 4, 2026, after last being in contact with loved ones on March 3. She was seen at Essex University in Colchester on that day before taking a 30-minute bus journey from Wivenhoe to Brightlingsea in the afternoon. Police believe she may have unmoored a boat from a pontoon in the harbour hours later, possibly between midnight and 6am on March 4.

The new CCTV footage, released by Essex Police on Tuesday, shows several vessels on the water during those early morning hours, described as part of regular marine work patterns. However, authorities have stated that there is still no clear footage to conclusively identify Ms Barreto as the individual who unmoored one of the boats.

Key Details from the Investigation

Detective Superintendent Anna Granger has made a public appeal for information, urging anyone who was working in or around Brightlingsea harbour between 12am and 6am on March 4 to come forward. In a statement, she said, "We’ve made a promise to Vitoria’s family that we will follow every reasonable lead. So, please, if you were on the water working in this time period, please come forward and speak to us."

Police have confirmed that Ms Barreto was seen walking alone by the waterfront at 12.16am on March 4, after climbing over a nearby fence. The vessel she is suspected of unmooring did not have its engine started and drifted out, later being found in the water near Bradwell-on-Sea that morning.

Additional Evidence and Searches

In a previous update on Monday, police revealed that they had found Ms Barreto's laptop in Brightlingsea and are investigating multiple potential sightings. Officers have conducted extensive searches across a "hugely significant area of land and coastline" but have so far not located the missing academic.

Ms Barreto was last seen wearing a dark coat, a blue turtleneck jumper, light blue jeans, and black trainers. Essex Police are asking the public to report any information, with real-time sightings to be reported by calling 999, or other details via their online portal or 101, citing incident 622 of March 4.

The case continues to draw attention as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to her disappearance, with the new CCTV footage offering a potential breakthrough in the investigation.
