Ten people, including six men, three women, and a child, were killed in a pre-dawn attack in Tehuitzingo, Mexico, on Sunday. The massacre is under federal investigation, with no suspects named yet, fueling fears of escalating cartel violence in the state of Puebla.
Wave of Bloodshed
This incident is part of a recent wave of bloodshed in the region, following other massacres in Huehuetlán El Grande and Puebla's capital. The violence has raised concerns about the government's ability to maintain order in areas plagued by organized crime.
Drone Attacks Displace Families
Separately, between 800 and 1,000 families were forced to flee their homes in the mountains of central Mexico due to attacks by a criminal mafia using drones and explosives. The violence in Guerrero, led by a group known as Los Ardillos, caused thousands, including children and the elderly, to evacuate their communities over several days.
The use of drones in attacks marks a troubling escalation in tactics by criminal groups, allowing them to strike from a distance and evade traditional security measures. Displaced families have sought refuge in nearby towns and makeshift shelters, with local authorities struggling to provide adequate aid.
Federal officials have deployed additional security forces to the affected areas, but residents remain fearful of further violence. Human rights organizations have called for a comprehensive strategy to address the root causes of cartel violence, including poverty and corruption.
