Police officers in Manchester rushed to a scene near a sports centre this afternoon following reports of a man brandishing a knife. Greater Manchester Police confirmed that a man has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, possession of a bladed article, and possession of class B drugs. The force also stated that an officer was assaulted during the response.

A significant police presence remains outside Denmark Road Sports Centre this evening. Denmark Road has been cordoned off, along with nearby Cecil Street. The incident occurred at approximately 4:55 pm when police received calls about a man brandishing a knife on Denmark Road in Manchester.
Police Statement
Greater Manchester Police issued a statement saying: "At around 4.55pm we were called to reports of a man brandishing a knife on Demark Road in Manchester. Police attended the scene [and] an officer was assaulted. A man has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, possession of a bladed article and possession of class B drugs. He remains in custody for questioning."
Eyewitness Account
Eyewitness Simon Bailey told the Manchester Evening News: "The injured officer was pulled away and got treated. There were about 30 officers there and they cordoned off the road." Images from the scene show at least eight police cars in attendance. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area, and motorists are urged to make alternative travel arrangements where possible.
