Armed police shot a 21-year-old man in Newport after responding to reports of threatening behaviour and finding him in possession of a crossbow, Gwent Police confirmed. The incident occurred on St Edward Street at 11:55pm on Friday, July 10.
Police response and medical care
Officers attended a property following reports of a man with a crossbow. Upon arrival, they located the individual and discharged a police-issued firearm, striking him. He received first aid at the scene before being transported to hospital. In an update issued on Monday, July 14, police stated the man remains in a stable condition.
Arrest and investigation
The man, from Newport, was arrested on suspicion of affray, threats to kill, and possession of an offensive weapon. A police spokesman said: "He is currently under police custody at hospital as inquiries continue." A mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following the shooting.
Public reassurance from police
Deputy Chief Constable Nicholas McLain addressed public concerns, stating: "We understand this matter may cause concern, but I want to reassure the public that it was isolated and there is no wider or ongoing risk; we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this matter." He added: "Reports involving firearms and weapons are rare in Gwent, but we take them extremely seriously and respond professionally and proportionately to the risk presented. Our firearms officers are highly trained and held to the highest standards. The discharge of a police firearm is always a last resort and only occurs where there is a significant threat to officers, the individual involved, or members of the public."
