A California man has been arrested after allegedly firing shots at a police helicopter during a chaotic standoff that erupted at a birthday party in Westminster.
The incident began when officers responded to reports of a domestic dispute at a residential property. Upon arrival, they were met with gunfire, forcing them to retreat and call for aerial support.
Dramatic Helicopter Standoff
As a police helicopter circled above the scene, the suspect—reportedly intoxicated and agitated—emerged from the house and began shooting at the aircraft. Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots as the helicopter took evasive action.
"It was like something out of a movie," said one neighbour. "He was just standing there, firing into the sky. We couldn’t believe what we were seeing."
Arrest After Tense Negotiations
SWAT teams and crisis negotiators were deployed to the scene, where they engaged in hours of negotiations with the armed suspect. Eventually, he surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody.
Authorities confirmed that no officers or civilians were injured during the incident, though the suspect himself sustained minor injuries. Police recovered multiple firearms from the property.
Birthday Party Turns Chaotic
According to initial reports, the altercation began during a birthday celebration at the home. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, allegedly became violent after an argument with family members.
Neighbours expressed shock at the escalation, describing the man as "usually quiet" but known to have a temper when drinking.
The investigation is ongoing, with charges expected to include attempted murder of a police officer and illegal discharge of a firearm.
