A man from Leicestershire has been jailed after subjecting his neighbours to a terrifying and prolonged campaign of abuse, leaving a family fearing for their safety in their own home.
Paul Marshall, 54, was sentenced to two years imprisonment at Leicester Crown Court after being found guilty of harassment without violence. The court heard how Marshall's behaviour created a living nightmare for the family next door.
A Sustained Campaign of Terror
The victim's ordeal began in August 2022 when Marshall started directing a stream of abuse at them. The harassment escalated to the point where the family felt like prisoners in their own property, too frightened to use their garden or open their windows.
One particularly disturbing incident involved Marshall making vile and offensive comments to the victim's young child. The constant abuse and threats created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation that persisted for months.
Police Investigation and Court Outcome
Leicestershire Police launched an investigation after multiple complaints from the distressed family. Detective Constable Sarah Murray, who led the case, stated: "No one should be made to feel scared in their own home. Marshall's actions were completely unacceptable."
Following his conviction, Marshall was handed a two-year prison sentence and received a five-year restraining order. This legally prevents him from contacting the victims or approaching their property upon his release.
A Message to Victims
DC Murray emphasised the importance of reporting such behaviour: "This case shows we will take reports of antisocial behaviour seriously and work to bring offenders before the courts."
The police have encouraged anyone experiencing similar neighbour harassment to come forward, assuring them that appropriate action will be taken to ensure their safety and peace of mind.
