An Indiana man has been arrested and charged with murder and arson following a devastating house fire that claimed the lives of three individuals, including his elderly grandmother and a woman suffering from cerebral palsy. The incident occurred in Monroe County, near Bloomington, and has led to a complex investigation and manhunt.
Fatal Fire and Discovery of Victims
Police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a fire at a residence on the 3800 block of East Anderson Road. Upon arrival, officers found the home engulfed in flames and a car crashed into the garage. They discovered several burn victims, including an 18-year-old woman who had managed to escape the blaze. Tragically, three bodies were later found inside the property.
Identification of the Deceased
The victims were identified as 74-year-old Mary Blake, the suspect's grandmother; Paula Anderson, 53, a caregiver; and Kristine Rowan, Anderson's daughter, who was bedridden due to cerebral palsy. The sheriff's office confirmed that Anderson and the teen were the only survivors who escaped the home.
Search and Arrest of Suspect
Authorities launched an extensive search for Brayden Blake, utilizing drones and tracker dogs. He was eventually located in a wooded area near the property, suffering from significant burn injuries. Blake was transported to Eskenazi Hospital for treatment, where he remained for an extended period under police security.
Investigation Findings
Investigators from the Monroe Fire District reported finding a plastic petrol can near the dining room and noted that a chair in the living room smelled of flammable liquid, suggesting the fire was intentionally set. This evidence played a crucial role in the arson charges.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
After being discharged from the hospital without prior notification to police, Blake was tracked down by State Police and U.S. Marshals in Avon, Indiana. He was subsequently arrested and booked into the Monroe County Jail on April 13, 2026.
Blake faces serious charges, including three counts of murder, three counts of murder while committing arson, and one count of arson. During a court hearing, he informed Judge Darcie Fawcett that he has no financial assets and was declared indigent, leading to the assignment of a public defender who had represented him in previous cases.
Current Status and Hearing
Brayden Blake has been remanded in custody pending a hearing scheduled for April 20, 2026. The case continues to develop as authorities piece together the events leading to the fatal fire, with the community reeling from the loss of life in this tragic incident.
