Lifeboat crew members from North Berwick RNLI and the coastguard have been honoured with a Hero to Animals award from Peta for their swift rescue of a dog that fell into the sea from a harbour wall.
The Rescue Operation
The incident occurred at Seacliff beach in East Lothian in February, when a Weimaraner named Sparkle fell four metres off a harbour wall into the water. Sparkle's 73-year-old owner, David Hall, immediately entered the cold water to assist his dog, holding onto her collar until rescuers arrived. A second member of the public also bravely entered the water to help during the incident.
Rescuers from North Berwick RNLI and the coastguard successfully recovered Sparkle from the sea and provided care to those who had entered the water, ensuring a positive outcome for all involved. The rescue was described as heroic, with the teams battling crashing waves to save the dog.
Recognition and Award
In recognition of their bravery and quick actions, the crew members received the Hero to Animals award from Peta. The award highlights the dedication of these volunteers who risked their own safety to save an animal in distress. The rescue has been widely praised, with many noting the selflessness of both the rescuers and the members of the public who assisted.
Sparkle's owner expressed immense gratitude to the teams, stating that without their help, the outcome could have been very different. The rescue serves as a reminder of the important work carried out by lifeboat crews and coastguard teams across the country.
