Libyan Migrant Receives 24-Year Sentence for Violent Knife Assault in West London

A Libyan migrant who had previously threatened to torch a taxpayer-funded hotel has been jailed for 24 years following a frenzied knife attack in Shepherd's Bush, west London. Abdalla Barka, 45, was found guilty of attempted murder and possession of a knife in a public place after a trial at Southwark Crown Court.

The Attack and Its Aftermath

On 12 February last year, Barka repeatedly knifed Hamza Al-Badri outside a cafe on Goldhawk Road after accusing the victim of stealing from him. The court heard that the two men had lived together briefly, but their relationship had deteriorated, leading to the confrontation.

Judge Alexander Milne described the assault as violent and sustained, noting that Barka pursued Al-Badri with a knife taken from the cafe. The victim suffered severe wounds to his left leg, leaving him unable to walk properly. He endured weeks of agony, multiple operations, and faces an uncertain recovery regarding the function of his leg.

Judge Milne emphasised that without the intervention of a brave member of the public, Barka likely would not have stopped before killing Al-Badri. In a statement, Barka claimed he acted out of fear for his safety, saying, I was worried about my life. I stabbed him many times in the heat of the moment.

Previous Criminal History and Sentencing

Barka had a prior conviction from 2023, when he was jailed for 15 months after threatening to set himself on fire and burn down Leonardo's Guest House in Swansea. He had been living at the seafront hotel when asked to leave, becoming extremely angry and making threats that left the owner terrified and in tears.

At sentencing, Judge Milne told Barka, You do not seem prepared to accept responsibility for your actions. He acknowledged Barka's chaotic lifestyle and homelessness at the time but underscored the severity of the crime. Barka will serve two-thirds of his 24-year sentence in custody.

Background and Potential Deportation

Born in Libya, Barka moved to Sweden before arriving in the UK eight years ago. He resided at Hunt Close in Shepherd's Bush at the time of the attack. Judge Milne noted that Barka may face deportation upon release, stating, It may well be that the appropriate authorities consider whether to permit your continued residence in the UK.

The case highlights ongoing issues related to violent crime and judicial responses in urban areas. Barka's denial of the charges did not sway the jury, who convicted him based on the evidence presented during the trial.
