Jury Fails to Reach Verdict in Airport Assault Retrial

The retrial of two brothers accused of assaulting a police officer at Manchester Airport has ended with the jury failing to reach a verdict. Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 21, and Muhammad Amaad, 26, faced charges of assaulting Pc Zachary Marsden during an incident in July 2024 that was widely shared on social media.

Court Proceedings

At Liverpool Crown Court, both defendants pleaded not guilty, asserting they acted in lawful self-defence or in defence of the other. The prosecution alleged they inflicted a 'high level of violence' on the officer. After nearly 20 hours of deliberation, Judge Neil Flewitt KC discharged the jury.

Next Steps

The case has been adjourned until 29 May to allow the Crown Prosecution Service to decide whether to pursue a third trial. Human rights lawyer Aamer Anwar accompanied the brothers to court, highlighting the case's significance.
