A night out turned violent when a man flew into a rage after his Jägerbomb was knocked over, leading to a brutal attack on his own girlfriend's brother in what magistrates described as a "sustained and nasty" assault.
The Incident That Sparked the Violence
Jack Bonsor, 28, had been enjoying drinks with his girlfriend and her family at The Bell Inn in Bicester when the situation dramatically escalated. The trigger? A simple spilled Jägerbomb that sent Bonsor into an uncontrollable fury.
According to court proceedings, the confrontation began when Bonsor's Jägerbomb cocktail was accidentally knocked over in the crowded pub. Instead of brushing off the incident, Bonsor directed his anger toward his girlfriend's brother, Harry Smith, launching a vicious attack that would later see him in court facing serious charges.
A Sustained and Nasty Assault
Prosecutor Tess Kenning described how the alcohol-fuelled violence unfolded: "The defendant became aggressive after his drink was knocked from his hand. He then punched Mr Smith multiple times to the head and body in a sustained assault."
The attack was so severe that Bonsor had to be physically dragged away from his victim by other pub patrons. Mr Smith sustained visible injuries including swelling and bruising to his face, requiring medical attention following the brutal beating.
Court Consequences and Sentencing
Oxford Magistrates' Court heard how Bonsor, of Chiltern Approach, Bicester, initially fled the scene but was later arrested and charged. He ultimately pleaded guilty to assault by beating.
In his defence, Bonsor claimed he couldn't recall the incident clearly due to his intoxicated state, telling police: "I don't remember what happened. I'd had too much to drink."
Magistrates handed down a 12-month community order with 80 hours of unpaid work, plus £200 in compensation to the victim and £114 in court costs. The chairman noted the seriousness of attacking a family member, stating it represented an abuse of trust within what should have been a close relationship.
