Husband of Maldives Diving Victim Says Something Happened

The husband of one of the five Italian divers who tragically lost their lives during an underwater cave expedition in the Maldives has spoken of his devastation, describing his wife as “among the best divers on earth” and insisting that “something must have happened down there.”

Five Italians Die in Maldives Cave Diving Tragedy

Five Italian divers, including marine biologist and television personality Monica Montefalcone and her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, died during an underwater cave expedition in the Maldives on Thursday. The group was exploring caves at a depth of 50 to 60 metres in Vaavu Atoll, approximately 64 kilometres from the capital Malé. They were reported missing after failing to resurface from an area notorious for strong currents and complex underwater tunnels.

Carlo Sommacal, Monica's husband and Giorgia's father, expressed his profound grief and disbelief. He stated that his wife possessed extensive experience and expertise, leading him to speculate that an unforeseen incident must have occurred during the dive. “She was among the best divers on earth. Something must have happened down there,” he said.

Rescue and Recovery Efforts

Maldivian rescue teams, including the coast guard and military units, launched a “high-risk” search and recovery operation near Alimatha. So far, one body has been recovered, while the remaining four are believed to still be within the submerged cave system. Efforts have been hampered by rough weather conditions, complicating the already perilous operation.

A Maldives government spokesperson confirmed that an investigation would be launched to determine how the divers went below the permitted depth in the extremely deep cave, which even specialist divers typically avoid approaching. The incident has sent shockwaves through the diving community and beyond, highlighting the dangers of cave diving in such challenging environments.

Background of the Victims

Monica Montefalcone was a well-known marine biologist and television personality in Italy, celebrated for her work in marine conservation. Her daughter Giorgia was also an experienced diver. The other three victims have not yet been publicly identified. The sole survivor of the group, who escaped death through what is described as a moment of luck, has not been named.

The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief in Italy and the Maldives, with tributes pouring in for the victims. The investigation will focus on the circumstances leading to the dive, including whether proper safety protocols were followed and how the group ended up at such depths.
