Human skeletal remains have been discovered in a wooded area adjacent to a busy road in Nottinghamshire, prompting an urgent police investigation to identify the individual.
Discovery by Member of the Public
The grim find was made by a member of the public at approximately 2:45 PM on Saturday, May 23, 2026, near the A617 Rainworth Bypass. Police were immediately alerted and attended the scene.
Police Investigation Underway
Nottinghamshire Police have confirmed that the remains are believed to belong to a single person. Detective Inspector Matt Scott stated that a dedicated team of officers, including forensic specialists, is working to establish the identity and circumstances surrounding the death. The force is keeping an "open mind" and warns that the investigation may take considerable time.
A large police cordon remains in place around the woodland, and officers will guard the scene for several days. The A617 itself remains open to traffic, causing minimal disruption.
