A vicious attack that shocked the community has concluded with a life sentence at the Old Bailey. Gyula Remes, a homeless man, was convicted for the murder of a generous hotel worker who had offered him a place to stay.
The court heard harrowing details of the unprovoked assault that took place in a hotel room in Westminster, central London. The victim, Balazs Varga, was described as a "kind and decent man" who was simply trying to help someone less fortunate.
A Brutal and Senseless Attack
Prosecutors detailed how the 23-year-old victim was subjected to a sustained and violent attack. Remes, who had been sleeping rough, was invited back to the hotel room by Mr. Varga. Instead of gratitude, Remes responded with extreme violence, beating and stabbing the good Samaritan.
The pathologist's report revealed the sheer brutality of the crime, noting the victim suffered a catastrophic stab wound to the neck among other severe injuries.
A Life Sentence for a Heinous Crime
Judge Angela Rafferty KC did not mince words during sentencing, stating the murder was committed with "gratuitous violence." She imposed a life sentence, ordering that Remes must serve a minimum of 20 years behind bars before being considered for parole.
The judge emphasised the tragic nature of the case, highlighting that Mr. Varga's act of kindness was met with the "ultimate betrayal."

The victim's family, who travelled from Hungary for the trial, expressed their profound grief in a moving statement. They described Balazs as a "wonderful son and brother" whose life was cruelly cut short just for trying to help another human being.
