Essex Police have confirmed that a six-year-old girl died following a serious collision on the A12 near Colchester on Monday, August 10. The incident involved a lorry and a car on the northbound carriageway near junction 28, close to Colchester.
Emergency response and road closure
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 10.30am. The road was shut in both directions to allow crews to work at the scene, causing hours of disruption for motorists.
Tragically, the girl died at the scene. A second child suffered a leg injury and is currently receiving hospital treatment.
Investigation underway
No arrests have been made. The lorry driver passed all roadside tests and is due to be interviewed in the coming days. Detective Inspector Mark Fraser, from Essex Police's serious collision investigation unit, is leading the inquiry.
He said: "First and foremost, my thoughts are very much with this young child's family and wider loved ones. We have specialist officers in place with them to ensure they are given as much support as possible. Our investigation is progressing and we will be interviewing a driver of a lorry in the coming days."
He added: "Incidents such as this are clearly sensitive and complex and we are committed to fully understanding the circumstances around what happened yesterday. If you have any information, dash cam or footage of any kind which you have not yet shared with us, please get in touch."
Appeal for information
A police spokesperson urged the public to come forward with any information, stating: "If you have information please contact us or independent charity Crimestoppers completely anonymously. Please quote incident 421 of 10 August when providing any information to make sure it gets to the right officer as quickly as possible."
