Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that the two individuals who died following an incident at Fistral Beach were a father and daughter from Doncaster.
Emergency services were called at around 9.45pm on Sunday, July 26, after reports that two people had been recovered from the water. Coastguard teams from Newquay, Padstow and St Agnes, along with Newquay RNLI lifeboats and a HM Coastguard helicopter, responded to the scene.
Victims identified
A man in his 60s and a woman in her 30s, both from Doncaster, were declared dead at the scene despite the efforts of emergency services. Their families have been notified and police have expressed their condolences.
A file is being compiled for HM Coroner. Police thanked all emergency service personnel and members of the public who assisted.
Appeal for sentimental handbag
The woman is believed to have entered the water carrying a handbag described as orange or peach in colour with a shoulder strap. The leather-effect bag, approximately 30cm by 30cm, is thought to contain personal items of immense sentimental value to her family.
Police are appealing for anyone who finds the bag to hand it in to Newquay Police Station or contact them, quoting incident number 50260197209.
